Jazz in July

Talented musicians from around the world come to UMass/Amherst each summer to train for two weeks of intensive study in three areas, instrumental ensembles, vocal jazz soloists with trios, and improvisation training. Now in its 27th year, Jazz in July is conducted by an illustrious network of current and former faculty.
Public performances and lectures by the artist faculty, and performances featuring our participants are integral to the program mix.

Five-Week Summer Performance Program

Now in its 21st year, this unique program brings together 900 students from across the USA and 50 different countries, offering a range of study options, world-class instructors, and state-of-the-art facilities. Students play in ensemble, develop improvisational and reading skills, improve technique in weekly private lessons, and take lectures and demonstrations by faculty and visiting artists. Students choose from jazz, pop/rock, funk/fusion or pop/r&b depending on their interests.

The Music of Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald
New England Conservatory
Boston
NEC faculty Ran Blake conducts this three-week summer course on two of the most unique figures in African-American music – Armstrong and Fitzgerald - focusing on their contributions and collaborations in jazz. Focus is on long-term melodic and harmonic memory. Gunther Schuller, former president of NEC, is the keynote speaker.
Open to undergraduate and graduate students.

Jazz Pedagogy Weekend
New England Conservatory

David Zoffer and Rich McLaughlin, internationally known clinicians on the topic, conduct this two-day seminar detailing basic concepts in teaching from a jazz perspective, and presenting practical ways to get students to improvise and be aware of stylistic differences. Instructors convey improvisational techniques and aesthetics used in performances of small groups and big bands. The course involves playing, improvising and composing.

Jazz/Musical Theater Dance Course
The School at Jacob’s Pillow
Becket
Program Director Chet Walker, with award-winning Broadway choreographers, teaches a three-week, intensive course on ballet, jazz, musical theatre dance, tap and vocal training. The course includes three public performances to build dancers’ ensemble skills.
The program culminates on August 23rd in a live performance called A Jazz Happening, which includes original choreography by faculty and live music by an onstage jazz band.

Song Writing Workshop

Songwriting Workshop offers you the opportunity to immerse yourself in the art of songwriting at any level. Classes include Melody Writing, Lyric Writing, MIDI Demo Techniques, the Business of Songwriting, and the Singer/Songwriter Workshop. The broad variety of songwriting topics offered in the classroom provides students with a chance to focus on your interests. The course is taught by faculty from Berklee’s Songwriting Department.
